1. Nard has ancient relatives—but no 4,000-year-old rulebook
People were racing pieces across boards long before apps, consoles or printed cards existed. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes ancient race games from Egypt and the Near East in which players moved pieces along a track and tried to get them off the board first. Dice, throw sticks and even animal knuckle bones supplied the uncertainty.
Finds from Jiroft in Iran, dating to around 2000 BCE, include a board with rows of twelve spaces grouped in sixes—features that feel familiar beside a backgammon board. The Met notes that ancient race games are often treated as precursors of backgammon, while the traditional account places backgammon’s invention in Persia much later, around the third or sixth century CE.
That is an exciting connection, but it is not proof that people in 2000 BCE played modern Long Nard. Ancient rules are often missing, and games changed as they travelled. The careful version of the story is still impressive: Nard belongs to a living family built around a challenge humans have enjoyed for thousands of years—mixing a random throw with a plan.
2. Dominoes escaped the table and became giant chain-reaction art
A domino tile was designed for matching and scoring, not falling over. Then people discovered that standing thousands of tiles on edge could turn a game piece into a tiny machine. One tap sends energy through the line, and a picture or pattern appears as the tiles fall.
The scale can be enormous. Guinness World Records reports that 89 builders at Domino Day 2009 toppled 4,491,863 dominoes in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. Imagine a team carefully placing millions of tiles, knowing that one careless hand could start the ending too soon.
Domino toppling is not a traditional rule of the matching game, but that is what makes the story fun. The same simple rectangle can power a tense score race at a table or a huge engineering spectacle watched by a crowd.
3. Durak became famous by looking for one loser, not one winner
Most games tell everyone to chase first place. Podkidnoy Durak does something stranger: according to the rules archive Pagat, the game officially has no single winner. Players get rid of their cards one by one, and the last person still holding cards is the durak—the “fool.”
That design changes the mood of the whole table. As players escape, the pressure gathers around the people who remain. A strong start can disappear after one bad pickup, and the final duel matters even when several players have already emptied their hands.
Durak is one of Russia’s best-known card games and is also played across several Eastern European countries. Traditional play often gives the loser the job of dealing the next hand, which naturally creates banter and a reason for an immediate rematch. The teasing is part of the social rhythm, but at a good table it stays friendly: the label belongs to the result, not the person.
4. Europe’s amazing chess robot had a person hiding inside
In the early 1770s, inventor Wolfgang von Kempelen presented a mechanical chess player later called the Mechanical Turk. A human-shaped figure sat behind a chessboard on top of a wooden cabinet. It toured Europe, faced challengers and even defeated Benjamin Franklin. To an audience living through rapid industrial change, it looked like a machine could think.
It could not. Sliding panels and a movable seat created a hiding place for a skilled human operator inside the cabinet. Magnets helped the operator follow moves on the board above, and a mechanical linkage controlled the figure’s arm. The “robot” played strong chess because a strong chess player was doing the thinking.
Edgar Allan Poe examined the act and published an essay called “Maelzel’s Chess Player” in 1836. He correctly argued that the machine was a hoax, although he did not solve every detail of its mechanism. Long before modern artificial intelligence, chess was already making people ask the same big question: can a machine really outthink us, or are we being fooled by the show?
5. Tetris travelled from a Soviet computer to the Game Boy
Tetris began in Moscow in 1984, when computer scientist Alexey Pajitnov created its first version on an Electronika 60. The machine had no modern game graphics, so the earliest blocks were drawn with text-like characters. The idea was stronger than the hardware: arrange falling four-square shapes, complete a line and make it disappear.
The game spread across the Soviet Union after an IBM PC version appeared in 1985, then reached computers in North America and Europe in 1987. But becoming famous also meant navigating a complicated international licensing journey. Designer and publisher Henk Rogers discovered Tetris in 1988, travelled to Moscow, secured handheld rights in 1989 and licensed them to Nintendo.
Nintendo bundled Tetris with the Game Boy, and the official Tetris history records more than 35 million copies sold. Pajitnov and Rogers later formed the business relationship behind The Tetris Company in 1996. A puzzle created on a limited Soviet computer had crossed borders, companies and legal negotiations to become one of portable gaming’s defining experiences.
6. Windows Solitaire was quietly teaching people to use a mouse
In 1990, a mouse was not an obvious everyday tool for many computer users. Clicking an icon, holding a button and dragging an object across a screen were new physical skills. A written manual could explain them, but Microsoft had a friendlier teacher: Solitaire.
Microsoft says Windows Solitaire was added to Windows 3.0 partly to teach users how to drag and drop. Moving a card from one pile to another rehearsed the same action used to move files and work with graphical programs. Players focused on building suits while their hands learned the interface.
It is a brilliant design lesson. The game did not announce a tutorial or give users a test. It offered a familiar goal, immediate feedback and enough repetition for a strange action to become natural. Sometimes the best teaching tool does not feel like school at all.
7. Fleet Battle was a pencil-and-paper game before the plastic ships
You do not need miniature ships to play a naval guessing game. You need two grids, secret positions and a way to record shots. The Strong National Museum of Play says Russian officers reportedly played a similar hand-drawn grid game during World War I, placing hidden battalions or ships and calling attacks at coordinates.
Commercial versions followed. Salvo supplied printed grids in 1931, and Milton Bradley released a pencil-and-paper game called Broadsides in 1943. The familiar plastic Battleship arrived in 1967, using fold-up cases to hold ships, mark shots and hide each player’s ocean from the opponent.
Fleet Battle keeps that paper game’s sharp central idea: every miss gives information, every hit narrows the search, and your placement is a bet on how another person thinks. Digital effects make the battle faster to read, but the real engine is still invisible information shared between two minds.
