How to play Chess.
Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on an 8×8 board of 64 light and dark squares. Each side commands sixteen pieces — one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights and eight pawns — and every piece moves in its own way: rooks travel in straight lines, bishops along diagonals, knights in an L-shape, and the queen in any direction. White always moves first, then players alternate turns, capturing an enemy piece by moving onto its square.
The goal is checkmate — trapping the opponent's king so it has no legal way to escape capture. Along the way you can castle to tuck your king to safety, promote a pawn that reaches the far rank into a stronger piece, and capture en passant. A game can also end in a draw by stalemate, threefold repetition or insufficient material.
